FRANCE : LIGUE 2TOURS – RACING CLUB LENSThe visitors have really responded to coach Eric Sikora and apart from a 4-0 defeat at Nantes in his first game in charge, which came when he had only been in the job four days, his team have a 5-2-0 record in the league and also won two cup games with a 9-0 goal difference. No one doubted that there was talent at the club , it was just that we never saw the best of them under Jean-Louis Garcia, that they have shown their better side for ”one of their own” is not a total surprise, Sikora has been at the club his entire career, man and boy, since he was 17 yo, 27 years as a player and assistant coach, before stepping up. ”Captain Siko” played well over 500 matches in the RCL backline and it is little surprise he has wasted no time in sorting out the defence, which has conceded just one goal in 600 minutes of football. That came in a match at Nimes which they won 2-1, they were ahead for an hour and really should have been two or three up, they dominated and had two goals disallowed and hit the woodwork, when the hosts equalised Lens upped their game and intensity and re-took the lead within ten minutes. You can see brief highlights of that game here LINK , I have spoken before about how you tell a lot about how together a team is by the way they celebrate goals and wins, watch this all the way to the end and see what happens in the dressing room after the match, this is a very motivated group of players.

Holding midfielder Pierre Ducasse (12 appearances-0 goals -0 assists) remains sidelined, but he has not played in six weeks and with no other problems,Sikora will make minimal changes from the last Ligue 2 game, a 1-0 defeat of inform Laval, after rested almost all his key players for the cup fixture at the weekend, where six unanswered goals further boosted their already high confidence levels. The unbeaten run has taken them up to fifth and just four points behind Guingamp, whom they host on Monday, in the final promotion spot, they will not want that gap to increase ahead of that key match and would dearly love to take the feel good factor into the Christmas break.

They will arrive in Tours with positive mental memories, having won 3-0 here back in April and also the reverse fixture by an identical margin, they have not conceded in the last four meetings between the two clubs and given the recent defensive prowess shown by the visitors a fifth clean sheet is a real possibility.

Hosts have taken ten points from their last four home starts, but have played teams with an average league placing of 17th in that sequence and are meeting much stronger opposition today. They are coming off a heavy 3-0 defeat at Le Havre, they didn’t give up completely, but some of the body language there was very poor and they looked like they had lost the game ( effectively they had) at the half time whistle, each goal conceded was followed by an on pitch inquest with someone being blamed and it was not a performance I liked at all. They looked vunerable aerially and from crosses in general and Lens are strong in this department. The visitors with the draw no bet option for me. 1.5 units Racing Club Lens  level ball 2.13 asian line.

It is going to be very cold in Tours tonight, but otherwise, conditions will be fine and that is pretty much the case across the four matches we are covering in France today.

Tours:  Benjamin LEROY, Benjamin BERTRAND,Clément FABRE, Wilfried MOIMBE, Léo SCHWECHLEN,  Xavier TOMAS, Stéphane TRITZ,  Pascal BERENGUER, Thomas GAMIETTE, Prince ONIANGUE, Billy KETKEOPHOMPHONE, Xavier CHAVALERI,  Bryan BERGOUGNOUX, Jérémy BLAYAC, Mohamed GHERIENI, Christian Yao KOUAKOU.

Racing Club Lens : Samuel Atrous, Rudy Riou ; Zakarya Bergdich, Nicolas Saint-Ruf, Alaeddine Yahia ; Ludovic Baal, Alexandre Coeff, Yohan Démont, Jérôme Le Moigne, Firas Mugrabi, Lalaina Nomenjanahary, Samba Sow, Pierrick Valdivia ; Dème N’Diaye, David Pollet, Yoann Touzghar.

ISTRES- LE HAVREThe vistors are another team who have upped their game recently and they have found a few goals in the process, scoring ten in winning their last four starts in all competitions. We discussed early season their more expansive style on the road, they have always been a very strong home team in Ligue 2 and that has continued in their new Stade Océane home, which is geared up for top flight football and the aim is to return to Ligue 1 as soon as possible, but they have tended to be too negative on the road, that was the ”old” Ligue 2 approach, but it no longer works to the same degree. They have not really got the reward this more attacking approach has deserved, but they finally got a first away win of the season at Sedan recently and followed it up with an emphatic 3-0 defeat of Tours ( see above preview) and can build on that at a venue they traditionally do well at, not losing in five visits to the Stade Parsemain. Three of their next four starts are at home and if they can pick up something tonight, they can close in on the eight points they currently trail Guingamp by, to at least stay competitive during the early part of 2013. Like Lens, this improvement has come under a new coach and they can continue to ride the wave of optimism that Christophe Revault has brought to the club, he has a couple of long term injuries but nothing too problematic, defensive midfielder Julian Francois (13-1-1) is the most important, but they have two natural replacements as options and Francois did not play in the win over Tours.Just one goal in three starts for Istres, which came against a struggling Le Mans team and that sequence included a home defeat to local rivals Arles who had been in freefall previously, ahead of the last of those a 1-0 loss at Guingamp, I wrote …

Whilst Guingamp cannot compete money wise with teams like Monaco, Lens and Nantes, their own playing budget dwarfs that of Istres who, along with Gazelec, are very much the poor relations in the division and they have done wonders to stay competitive for the last two and now a third season in a row, largely free of any relegation concerns, which is viewed as a successful campaign. Another midtable finish looks about right for them, despite a strong start to their season. They have lost four of their last seven, including a home local derby defeat to Arles ( who had lost seven in a row previously) last time out, a loss they have had to stew on for ten days. Left winger Driss Fettouhi (11-2-1) was dismissed rather harshly there and is suspended tonight, key midfielder Kevin Bru (14-2-2) and left back Alain Cantareil (11-0-0) also failed tests and have not been named in the squad . They have performed badly without Bru and lost 2 of three without Cantareil, they are going to miss all three and will be weakened on that left flank.

They had problems, but Guingamp’s were far worse and the scoreline heavily flattered Istres. They have Cantareil and Bru back in the squad today, but Driss Fettouhi is still missing.

Like Sikora at Lens, Revault, a former top class goalkeeper, has made sorting out the backline a priority and they can keep another cleansheet and a fourth in five visits to Istres this evening. 1.25 points Le Havre +0.25 ball 2.08 asian line.

Istres : Petric, Véronèse – Chafik, Chelle, Barrillon, Cantareil, I.Ba, Bru, Tardieu, Touati, Akrour, Niangbo, Moulin, Sainati, Tarasconi, Belmonte, Yahia-Chrif, Hama, Genest.

Le Havre : Boucher, Samba – Rivierez, Genton, Z.Touré, Ben.Mendy, Nouri, Zola, Mesloub, E.L. Ba, Bonnet, Malfleury, Le Marchand, D.Traoré, Mahrez, Koïta.

Good Luck.

    FRANCE : LIGUE 1

    VALENCIENNES- PSG

I do think that backing teams at sub 2.0 on the road in Ligue 2 is a winning long term policy, but I priced PSG at circa 1.70 for this ”must win” game and so have to take the current quote.

They are already five points adrift of leaders Lyon, who host basement club Nancy tomorrow and with the big two scheduled to clash at the weekend, failure to capture maximum points tonight, could see them go into that match more than two wins behind the team who won the title seven straight years from the 2001-02 season and know how to get the job done.

We opposed Valenciennes at Nancy over the weekend and they were fortunate to come away with a share of the points, ahead of that I wrote ”Valenciennes have had a terrific season and will be delighted with their top five position, but in reality, they are only ten clear of the drop zone and another midtable finish, will, I am fairly sure , be the extent of their ambition for this season. Performances have tailed off somewhat recently and they were very fortunate to beat Reims 1-0 last week. They arrive without Brazilian central defender Gil ( 15-1-0), he has missed just one match in the last 12 months, a 3-0 home defeat to Evian and will be missed.”

Gil is back tonight , but holding midfielder Remi Gomis ( 10-0-0) will be a big loss, especially with the visitors having so many options in the middle of the park, more of that shortly, hosts have lost just one in ten when Gomis plays at least 45 minutes and that came on the road at Lyon, by the odd goal in five.

Thiago Motta returned for PSG against Evian and they looked imperious in a 4-0 win, during which they completed a Ligue 1 high 619 passes, with fellow defensive midfielder Blaise Matuidi (15-2-0) and Marco Verratti (12-0-2), both back from suspension this evening and Clement Chantôme and Javier Pastore now in good form, PSG have a surplus of midfield riches at their disposal and all will have to be on their toes to start on a regular basis, with competition for places really keen right now. Coach Carlo Ancelotti praised the change in attitude from Pastore and to be honest, I am really looking forward to the game with Lyon, which could be a classic, but first, the big spending Parisians need the points tonight.

The h2h matches here in recent seasons have been fun, with PSG winning the last four, scoring 12 goals, including a 4-3 and 3-2 win. There is some 3.75-4.33 around for PSG to score over 2.5 goals which is attractive if you can bet that, but I am keeping things simply and opting for 1.5 units PSG -0.5 ball 1.87 asian line…. there is some 1.91 around in places.
